Polygon Network Overview – What Is MATIC & How It Works

Polygon is a Layer-2 scaling solution built on top of Ethereum, designed to address the blockchain's limitations of slow transaction speeds and high gas fees. The Polygon network uses a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism and can process up to 65,536 transactions per block, dramatically outperforming the Ethereum mainnet.

What Is MATIC?

MATIC is the native token of the Polygon network. It serves three primary functions: paying transaction fees on the Polygon chain, participating in network governance where holders vote on protocol upgrades, and staking to secure the network in exchange for staking rewards. The ticker MATIC originates from the project's original name, MATIC Network, which later rebranded to Polygon in 2021.

Polygon was co-founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and Anurag Arjun, launched in 2020 and backed by Binance and Coinbase.

How Polygon Works

Polygon operates as a sidechain parallel to the Ethereum mainnet. Users bridge their tokens from Ethereum to Polygon to interact with decentralized applications at a fraction of the cost. The Plasma framework allows for scalable and autonomous smart contract execution, while the PoS checkpoint system periodically submits state confirmations to the Ethereum mainnet, inheriting a degree of its security.

Polygon Ecosystem

The Polygon ecosystem has grown to support thousands of decentralized applications. Major DeFi protocols including Uniswap, Aave, and Curve operate on Polygon. Global brands including Disney, Adidas, Starbucks, and Reddit have used Polygon for NFT and blockchain initiatives. The network processes millions of transactions daily with fees often below $0.01.

Polygon 2.0 and the POL Token

Polygon 2.0 introduced a major upgrade to the ecosystem's architecture, including the migration from MATIC to the POL token. POL is designed to support a multi-chain system called the AggLayer, unifying dozens of ZK-powered chains under a single interoperability layer. This positions Polygon as infrastructure for the broader Ethereum ecosystem rather than a single sidechain.
